The tasting room is in the original McConnell farmhouse built in 1858 and is filled with historic family photographs

The vineyard consist of 650 of those acres  and is planted in Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Syrah, Syrah, and Barbera, of which only one percent is used for McConnell Estates wines, making them a large grower but boutique winery with a total annual case production of approximately 2,500 cases.

When asked what sets McConnell Estates apart, Mike Wackman, the winemaker says “I strive to make wines that are true to our region, true to the varietals and a pleasure to drink” and invites wine lovers to discover the gold for themselves by visiting the tasting room weekends between 11 and 5.

Elk Grove Winery Medals Again!

Elk Grove, CA- January 2006 - McConnell Estates Winery in Elk Grove, CA won two more medals for their wines in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition held January 11-13th in which over 3,000 wines competed.  Their 2003 Merlot won a silver medal and their 2003 Wackman Ranch Zinfandel won a bronze medal.  Both wines are 100% estate grown on Wackman Ranch in Elk Grove, CA and are both are produced and bottled at the winery in Elk Grove.

This is the second medal for the 2003 Merlot which received a bronze medal at the 2005 CA State Fair Wine competition which was held in June of 2005.  “This soft merlot with hints of oak and mellow tannins remained in French oak barrels for 18 months and was bottled in February of 2005.  It was released to the public in September of 2005 and has only been improving with age” stated Mike Wackman, President of McConnell Estates Winery.

The 2003 Wackman Ranch Zinfandel follows the tradition of previous Zinfandel’s grown on Wackman Ranch of having a lot of fruit forward flavors and hints of oak.  This zinfandel was aged in a combination of French oak and American oak barrels for 2 years to give it those supple flavors needed to be an award winning wine.  “Just bottled in November of 2005 and released last week, I expect this zinfandel to carry on the tradition of winning several awards as did our 2002 Wackman Ranch Zinfandel” Mike states.

“Both of these vineyards have consistently produced high quality fruit” explains Howard Wackman, a partner in Wackman Ranch who manages the growing of the grapes, “and the 2003 year was no exception.”
